Saturday 12th March

Goodbye, have good sea in the moonlight

Una volta sognai

di essere una tartaruga gigante

con scheletro d’avorio

che trascinava bimbi e piccini e alghe

e rifiuti e fiori

e tutti si aggrappavano a me,

sulla mia scorza dura.

Ero una tartaruga che barcollava

sotto il peso dell’amore

molto lenta a capire

e svelta a benedire.

Così, figli miei,

una volta vi hanno buttato nell’acqua

e voi vi siete aggrappati al mio guscio

e io vi ho portati in salvo

perché questa testuggine marina

è la terra

che vi salva

dalla morte dell’acqua.

                                                                                                                                                          Alda Merini

"Una volta sognai" Parole per Lampedusa

I once dreamed

to be a giant turtle

with ivory skeleton

that dragged children and children and algae

and waste and flowers

and they all clung to me,

on my hard skin.

I was a staggering turtle

under the weight of love

very slow to understand

and quick to bless.

Thus, my children,

once they threw you in the water

and you have clung to my shell

and I have brought you to safety

because this sea turtle

is the earth

that saves you

from the death of water.
